Return of the sheep from the summer pastures in Val Senales
Every year in September, Val Senales is venue for the widely known transhumance celebrations when the sheep return from the summer pastures. It's a century-old tradition, that shepherds move their sheep to the Ötztal Valley over Giogo Alto and Giogo Basso in June. This 2-day march includes 44 km, part of which lead over snowfields and steep rock and ice furrows. When they return home in autumn, the conditions are considerably better than in spring, and the sheep are welcome with big celebrations in Val Senales and numerous onlookers. Music, shows by the local whip crackers, typical specialties from Val Senales and grilled lamb and sheep dishes await locals and guests when celebrating the return of the sheep.
