Irrigation channels

Irrigation channels were developed in the western part of South Tyrol as an irrigation system for the orchards. Small paths were realised along the irrigation channels for maintenance and control of the water flow. Nowadays, you can enjoy a comfortable walk along these channels. There are numerous irrigation channels in Val Senales and surroundings, which are definitely worth a visit.
Val Senales / Ciardes irrigation channels
From Altratheis in Val Senales, the path leads through an enchanting needle forest on the right side of the valley. Then a steep slope follows, where you require a secure step and have to be free of dizziness. Before leaving for this hike, you should ask about the path condition in your accommodation or the local Tourism Board (we do not recommend this tour after heavy rainfalls). Before reaching the "Schlosswirt Juval" inn, there is a longer downhill section. The path leads past Juval Castle, residence of extreme mountaineer Reinhold Messner, and a museum with a comprehensive Tibetan collection, a mountain pictures gallery and a mask collection. Through a birch forest, you will reach Ciardes, Colsano and Castelbello, where you start the descent to the village centre at the Köfelgut Winery.

Marlengo irrigation channel
The Marlengo irrigation channel can be accessed at different places. It starts at Tel, where the water of Adige River is deviated, and leads along the slope of Marlengo Mountain, above the villages Foresta, Marlengo and Cermes. The path leads past Lebenberg Castle and ends at the Raffein Canyon near Lana, where the water flows into Valsura River.

Lagundo irrigation channel
The Lagundo irrigation channel is a two-part, 5 to 6 km long hiking path. Almost flat and with splendid viewpoints, it leads to the Val d'Adige Valley. The western part starts at the car park at Töllgraben Bridge and leads through Plars di Sopra and Plars di Mezzo to Grabbach River. The eastern part starts in the village of Lagundo at Grabbach River and leads to S. Maddalena in Quarazze with access to the Tappeiner trail.

Parcines irrigation channel
The Parcines irrigation channel is a one-hour walk above the village centre of Parcines (direction of the waterfall) at the high-alpine plateau Salto. The trail leads in an eastern direction past Postal and ends in the village district Vallettina at the Niedermair Guesthouse.

Latschander irrigation channel
The Latschander irrigation channel starts in the harbour of Tiss in the village of Coldrano. The path leads along a sunny hill above the Adige Canyon all the way to Castelbello.

Staben irrigation channel
The Staben irrigation channel leads to the village of Ciardes past the Himmelreich Guesthouse to Stava, always along the sunny Monte Sole. On the last part, you can admire the beautiful vineyards of the Unterortl Winery on the Juval hill. You can taste the noble wines directly in the winery (guided tours every 2nd Thursday of the month, registration at the Tourism Board). From the winery, there is a shuttle bus from Juval Castle to the valley or take path no. 1 down to Stava.
